Devil May Cry returns after a long break, and does so with significant developments.Ninja Theory handles Capcom reinvent the franchise with a much younger Dante and current Sparda’s son.
Capcom has managed to play their cards well. Devil May Cry was a saga with a blazing start that gradually fallen into oblivion. With the second installment was not bad (although the game was a disaster), with the third got a bit more attention … and finally Devil May Cry 4, while not exactly bad harvest sales, failed to validate the success of the original . In part it was because it was neither fresh nor original, partly saw how Dante had lost some of its importance in this generation of consoles, and we must not forget the fierce competition that has counted.

In this situation, Capcom was very clear that his demonic adventure needed a reboot, a twist to submit something to return to engage players … and saw the perfect studio Ninja Theory to carry out this idea. By all accounts, Capcom gave them a large degree of freedom and this was apparent in the official announcement of the development of DmC.
The main reason for criticism was, by far, the change in appearance of Dante, who left behind their most rumpled and mature – including its characteristic white hair – for a more youthful appearance, with brown hair and short hair. Thus far conforms to the shape of what is fashionable now … but it also seemed that the road lost much of its personality. Fortunately, nothing is further from reality, because after having played from beginning to end we are very clear that this is a product that pays homage to its predecessors, the fans care that has earned so far and presents a step cool and fun development that revitalizes the series altogether.
The Story
DmC starts so dazzling, featuring Dante in his own caravan with a couple of girls-demon. The so badass lifestyle that leads the protagonist draw the attention of a Demon Hunter, who will visit the next morning. This will creep into Limbo, which is represented by transforming the real world scenario where we are in some ways more figures or grotesque. At the moment we meet Kat, a medium who later will present our brother Vergil. At first the protagonist will cost you assume this relationship, but after the great mission in the family mansion where he lived as a child, and things will become clearer.
Both Dante and Vergil are a Nephilim, creatures that are half angel half demon, something owed to his father Sparda (Devil) and his mother Eva (Angel). Their marriage was not well received, and therefore appeared Mundus, the evil nemesis of this adventure, who finished in various ways with the parents of our character. When Dante discovers that his plan for revenge starts, but also seems very concerned about eliminating all demonic ilk raging in the human population – who live deceived – but are gradually being infected because the most popular drink worldwide, Virility.
Throughout the adventure we find some passages in which the plot is certainly interesting. The beginning is very good and continues halfway excellent pace. But then it seems that all the cards are on the table, leaving little to the imagination and plot twists, as in most of the second half of the adventure we’ll have to pursue a single goal.
Gameplay
Clearly, if a DMC will draw attention is not a complex script or compelling story – which still must recognize that is pretty well told – but for the fun combat system to devise, by the varied cast of enemies or presented to us by the wealth and magnificence of the situations that we have to live, and in this sense we say that Ninja Theory has nailed it.
What surprised us most is the change in direction for the battle is not the only star of the adventure, it coexists with many phases or sequences platforms. This would have added two interesting gadgets, such as the Flip Angelic Demon and Elevation. They’re kind of whips which perform very different, because one of them used to start around the stage and form new platforms (or lure enemies to our position), while the other serves to displace up to the ledge Dante is highlighted in the game interface (or get to the position of one of the enemies). Not only be useful for the phases of platforms, but also for fighting, allowing us to remain in the air for combat flying beasts without touching the ground. In this case, it will complete multi-hit combos, all of which are really deadly.
Dante will also have a broad arsenal to defeat the beasts of the underworld, such as the Rebellion sword, the Ebony and Ivory pistols, shotgun Revenant and Kablooey explosive dart gun. To this we must also add a couple of guns and a couple angelic demonic. The demonic are the ax Eryx Arbiter and cuffs, while those from the sky are the scythe Aquila Osiris and disks. The most interesting part is that these four different weapons may open doors or activate different platforms with the intention of defeating a boss or stays open secret that often store different collectibles. In addition, certain types of enemies can only be damaged with weapons of one of these types.
All these weapons will confer great power to Dante, generating a series of extremely powerful and large combos. The combat system is fun and quite technical, for the perfect button presses allow us to deploy a large offensive power. In this case we see that the firearms charge a lower role they had in past deliveries, but still be vital to extend the number of hits of each combo.
What has remained from the original scoring system is the style of our blows. This is essential for the adventure, as we get the score for each of the levels can be shared on the Internet to compare it with the results of other users worldwide. A different and original way to overcome these demonic monsters.
The collectibles provide enough development, it is not uncommon to find placements in the first ten levels that we can not open any means. This is because Dante will learn new skills almost to the end, and is a very good excuse to revisit old missions and get 100% in each of them. Thus more is able to extend the life of the product, increasing the ten hours that has led the campaign to overcome the first time we’re done.
Among the collectibles we find trapped souls and release keys that open doors that hide behind secret missions. These small steps are proposing trial or combat challenges like having to kill X enemies before the timer reaches zero, overcoming a small platform stage shortly or kill enemies without taking damage. In total there are 21 secret missions, a fairly large number.
At the end of the adventure also unlock new gameplay options, such as how “Son of Sparda”, which raises the level of difficulty beyond the Nephilim (difficult), and also includes new behaviors for certain types of enemies. This is felt in the fighting against the bosses, who have more movement when we meet again with them. Moreover, the most skilled have a challenge to his height modes “Heaven and Hell” and “Hell and Hell”. As if this were not enough, Ninja Theory has managed to create a set of standards that will keep us glued to the TV for hours, not only because we will appeal the first time we visit. Seriously, there are some missions that could be used as examples of how to make a spectacular development and, most importantly, fun.
Graphics
We have always been fascinated by the great work done Ninja Theory when designing characters and environments, and in this sense is a more DmC its formidable good work. In Heavenly Sword dazzled us with the design of the protagonist and her red hair in the wind. In Enslaved was the character design as Pigsy and Monkey that really attracted us … and this time we have been carefully worked it so much the design of enemies, like the main characters and scenarios.
Special mention for the appearance of the environments, which are transformed enormously by the duality between the limb represented here and the real world. Many times we will be playing in the version of the limbo of scenarios like streets, communications tower, a huge disco etc. Each of these locations undergoes a complete transformation, having as notable examples as colorful and striking appearance showing roads and platforms at the disco – where the colors yellow, red and blue are of special importance – or a small part of level communications tower, where we will be playing a zone overcome platform in which we seem to be within the typical initial curtain a newscast. These are only two examples, but any mission show a much more grotesque and actual appearance disjointed scenarios, watching the streets are broken, how to lengthen the halls, how to break into pieces each and every one of the rooms of a room until it shattered, etc.
The formidable work in the artistic design of scenarios must add also a great character design. Not go into the controversy of the change in appearance of Dante, because the truth is that eventually leaves a feeling that has not lost the essence of the character. Moreover, we liked the look of Kat, leaving the line of women with large breasts lush who had seen ad nauseum … but those who want their share of females will continue to air at Lilith. As for the enemies to note that each type has a trabajadísimo aspect, from the furies to the enemies that come to replace the typical puppet of the first deliveries of Devil May Cry. We can not stop praising the working aspect of the bosses, with special mention for the spawn facing us in the club – which is nasty – or the psychedelic aspect of the enemy that we will run in the communications tower.
Now finally, note that the whole shown solid from start to finish, with no notable defects graphics, and present a fairly advanced texturing and colorful light effects and very present throughout the whole adventure. Nor bother loading times, which although they may be somewhat higher to access a new level, are quite scarce.
Sound
We’ve said for weeks in advance of the almost final version to which we had access, but we still leave the amazement of how great it will feel the soundtrack to the development of this game. Incorporating NOISIA Combichrist and is a huge news for music lovers, because although electronic music or techno touch and industrial metal is not your favorite genre, no doubt creating a symbiosis between visual and paragraphs sound that is fabulous.
The musical presentation and invites us to put the red carpet, for the song “Never Surrender” Combichrist prints great strength and violence, thanks to the percussive sound of the melody. Such effects and motivate us to live a much more intense fighting. Moreover, not for me to go to put into question the quality of NOISIA issues, but after having listened carefully – and despite being my cup of tea – I must say that not as lucid or as spectacular as Combichrist. The remaining elements of the noise level are also very careful. The sound effects scratch at a very good level, while the quality of dubbing could be located around remarkable.
Verdict
Capcom and Ninja Theory have created a tremendously fun and exciting adventure. Few niggles can be put to work they have created, that will certainly be remembered at year’s end as one of the best games we’ve seen in this brand new 2013. Offers an exciting development, perfectly choreographed action sequences and some not so spectacular that we matter again revive. Too bad the plot does not reach this level so extraordinary, but more than enough to enjoy the adventures of this young Dante. Now only missing out on what direction the series will both Devil May Cry and Ninja Theory study, because the truth is that this duo has worked smoothly.
Best : The combat system offers multiple options, and therefore it is great fun. The phases of raised platforms are very well, giving rise to some of the most trepidantes development. Very good visuals, especially in the artistic. The soundtrack is fabulous.
The worst : that the plot loses some steam in certain moments. The last mission is perhaps the weakest of all.
